A Charleston Engagement | Stephanie + Jason

During this weird time where we are all in our homes every day I’m tackling my #20for2020 list. This is my second year making a list of things to accomplish that make me happier.  If you are interested in this topic, here is more information: https://gretchenrubin.com/2020/01/20-for-2020-list

#20 on my list is “Catch up on old blog posts” so here’s an engagement from a few years ago:

Stephanie + Jason met in Columbus, Ohio where they are both from (and me too!) Their first date was at the Columbus Zoo to see the Christmas lights. They shopped for rings together and settled on a beautiful pear-shaped rose gold ring.  Stephanie was imagining a romantic beach proposal, but instead Jason proposed on New Years Eve surrounded by all their closest friends. Stephanie was so surprised and excited to show the ring off to everyone before coming back to South Carolina. They plan to wed this summer back in Ohio.  Congrats to the happy couple!

A Morris Island Engagement | Kate + Ben

During this weird time where we are all in our homes every day I’m tackling my #20for2020 list. This is my second year making a list of things to accomplish that make me happier.  If you are interested in this topic, here is more information: https://gretchenrubin.com/2020/01/20-for-2020-list

#20 on my list is “Catch up on old blog posts” so here’s an engagement session that was never blogged about:

A few years ago I got to photograph a really cool engagement session on Morris Island!  Morris Island is an uninhabited island in Charleston Harbor that is only accessible by boat – though I’ve heard during extremely low tides you can walk from the Lighthouse Inlet side of Folly Beach. The Morris Island Lighthouse used to be on Morris Island, but with barrier islands being in a constant state of flux and erosion, the lighthouse now stands in the water.

I met Kate and Ben at the dock where they keep their boat on the Folly River and we rode through the river and creeks for their unforgettable engagement session!

Kate + Ben’s relationship started at the beach. Kate was in grad school at MUSC and spent spent her weekends on Sullivan’s Island. One weekend, on a whim, she decided to drive 45 minutes out of her way to Folly Beach.  She had never visited Folly and certainly didn’t expect to be making any life altering decisions that day. She picked a secluded spot just to the right of the pier and sat down to soak up the sun. Five minutes later a classmate texted and invited her to a cast party going on at Folly.  Kate gladly accepted, hoping to get to meet some movie stars!  It was at that party she met a tan, sandy-haired electrician that she would spend the rest of her life with. Ben and Kate were inseparable ever since.

On their first date they went to Morris Island on Ben’s boat to see the lighthouse, which has become a symbol of their relationship.  Ben and Kate got married at the Cotton Dock at Boone Hall Plantation later that year.

Blog Post Catch Up | Sara + John

During this weird time where we are all in our homes every day I’m tackling my #20for2020 list. This is my second year making a list of things to accomplish that make me happier.  If you are interested in this topic, here is more information: https://gretchenrubin.com/2020/01/20-for-2020-list

Here’s an engagement shoot from 2017:

Sara and John at Drew University. They both played soccer and John had a huge crush on Sara and asked mutual friends to introduce them. They danced together at the school’s “Holiday Ball” and have been inseparable ever since!

For their 5 year anniversary, John planned a fancy dinner.  When it was time for dessert, a waiter brought out a silver platter with a dome lid and said, “this is a surprise for you two”. Underneath, there was a small black box surrounded by rose petals. John grabbed the box and got down on one knee. When they got home to their apartment, their closest friends were waiting to celebrate! Sara says “I’m still finding confetti!”

Surrounded by friends and family, Sara and John got married in 2018. Sara said “We’re going for a floral, romantic vibe with a Southern flair.  Think mason jars and lace!  We’re using all pastel colors to complement our spring wedding.”

Congrats to this adorable couple!

34 West: a Proposal!

Steven and Hannah are regulars at 34 West shows so naturally Steven thought this would be the perfect place to propose!  I was thrilled when Tabitha from 34 West contacted me and we worked together with Steven to make the perfect plan.

I had Steven send me a photo of himself and Hannah so I would recognize them when they arrived.  It was so hard for all of us to play it cool and not stare at them as they found their seats, ordered drinks, and got ready for the show!  At one point Steven looked at me and winked, I nodded.  The plan was on. 🙂

During the show I pretended to take photos of the show as I normally do and I also took lots of photos of Steven and Hannah.  After the bow, Jeff invited Steven up on stage and he made an adorable speech and asked Hannah to marry him.  Not a dry eye in the house!

Congrats, Steven and Hannah!

Old Santee Canal Park Engagement | Jenna + Garrett

It’s not often I get to go to a new place for a photography session.  Typically I’m running a circuit between downtown Charleston (Waterfront Park, the Battery), Hampton Park, Folly Beach and Isle of Palms.  All incredibly beautiful places, but I do get excited about a new location idea.  Jenna and Garrett live in Cordesville and they suggested Old Santee Canal Park.  And it is LOVELY!  The park has an interpretive center, grand trees, a dock, and a plantation house dating to 1840. There was no shortage of beautiful backdrops for Jenna and Garrett’s engagement photos!

A Folly Beach Engagement | Anna-Morgan + Greg

High-school sweethearts, Anna-Morgan + Greg, wanted to have their engagement photos taken at the far east end of Folly Beach, near the Morris Island Lighthouse.  They fought sand gnats and the threat of rain, but were blessed with a dreamy sky and perfect lighting.
